The MIUs are luxurious buses, equipped with structured cabled local area network (LAN) of computers (servers and workstations), printers, and multi-media facilities. Transportable Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) equipment with a very small dish mounted on the roof of the bus provides online real-time international Internet access.
One unique aspect of the MIU is that it is a completely made in Nigeria product through the initiative of NITDA. This has reduced the cost considerably to about 40% of the cost of an imported one. The Mercedes Benz buses used were assembled by ANAMMCO in Enugu; the restructuring of the buses into mobile computer was done by Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) which is another Agency of Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, while the structured cabling and installation of other IT facilities were done by NITDA.
This project is already enhancing the penetration of the internet training, IT literacy and its applications in areas such as Education, Agriculture, Health and other socio-economic development spheres especially in the rural areas. It is also the objective to market the MIU in the West African sub-region. The project has already been hailed by many international development partners, such as Economic Commission for Africa.
Over 10,000 people including students and people in both urban and rural areas in the North, South and Eastern parts of Nigeria have been trained using the MIUs.
